And that's just the queue for the car park once you get there!

I'm undecided this year as yet.

You can get a direct train from London Waterloo if I recall.

circa £30 from london waterloo to Salisbury, takes 2 hours, followed by a 20 minute bus ride to the stones apparently

Yup, that's what I did last time I went, though my ticket was slightly more cos I came from Cambridge and took a tube from Kings X to Waterloo.

Imagine I'll be doing the same this year.

The bus to the stones is every hour starting from evening, and includes a trip back in the morning.
It's probably walkable (speaking as a country lad), but I suspect the thought of walking it would be less appealing the morning after than the night before.

To go back to Samians point, there aren't really 'tents' as such anymore, i'm pretty sure they aren't allowed. Just lots of people sitting in circles around their belongings/beers and lighting spliffs when the police aren't nearby. Then everyone wanders over to the stones and you can barely move for the flow of human bodies through the site.
As for the driving, yes I too spent 5 hours getting there.... and we only left from Southampton! It was an hour and we were within 3 miles of the site, then 4 hours sitting in the queue to make the turning into the car park whilst they search every individual car coming (Or so people in other cars with friends up front told us). We ended up getting scared and driving to Salisbury and jumping on the bus with everyone else and it arrived pretty quickly at the Henge for about £10 (we were told on the Henge website it'd be free though so we were right pissed off by now).

We left about 12 noon to get there expecting a 2 hour trip, arrived at about 10pm after a hell of a traffic jam, and a few pints in Salisbury to take the edge off the wait.

I found the train-bus way much easier on my frazzled brain the next day. No way I could have coped with driving... of course I don't own a car anymore, so it isn't even an option.

It's an awesome place to do acid, probably the best place I've done it setting wise. Feels really powerful around the stones..but I doubt it would be much fun sober..

Its just the queues and crowds that I can't be arsed with, especially if I'm tripping...

I waited until I'd found my spot.. you know,, The Spot, my anchoring point, and took it there. The crowds were what made it so special, the constant beat of the drum made it feel quite shamanic, and the cheers of the crowds would always lift me up and up and up... and the stone... my god... THE STONES.

But then somebody ripped up my anchor and lead us back to the car.. It's own little bubble universe; in a sea of self adsorbed bubble universes, slowly drifting apart, away from their once holy unity into apathetic consumerist contempt...

Took me 20 mins on the bike.

I don't think they were searching all cars, but definitely snarling things up so you'd think twice next time.

The body searches on the gates themselves were a bit half arsed.

When I went to henge there was some guy shouting "ECSTASY OR ACID?!" right in front of the security guards, and we called him over and traded some acid for some weed right under their noses. They didn't say shit. ANd half the police looked like they were on acid themselves...

Although I did have visions towards the end of the police herding us into orwellian dystopias, but that's just my mind wandering

Which henge did you go to? It didn't seem like that at all for me last year. A few bored looking gate security doing the occasional half arsed search. Didn't see anyone busted, didn't see anyone even spoken to sternly.

YMMV I guess
