Default Used 20D, used 30D or something else?

My consumer gland is getting a hard-on causing me to want to upgrade my trusty 5/6 year old Fuji S7000 bridge camera. I mainly shoot landscapes although also do portraits and general. Although this will be my first DLSR, I'm not new to SLRs/photography in general so I'm not looking for an absolute entry-level DSLR.

I was initially looking into 350D, 400D etc but a friend of mine strongly recommended I look at the double-digit Canons instead so I've been looking at second hand Canon 20D and 30D, with either a kit or Sigma lense to start with (I'll be adding to the glass over time).

So what say you? Equal money will get me either a used 20D with half-decent glass, or a used 30D with a kit lense, or is there a worthy alternative I haven't considered?

Fangks.

Go for the 30, its a massive improvement over the 20. But get some decent glass as soon as you can.

I was hoping you'd say they both use the same image pipeline (DigicII) so get the cheaper 20D and some reasonable glass.

But, I see from that link that there are a few more differences between the two models than I realised from the little looking around I've done so far.

Cheers dude, what are your thoughts on equivalent Nikon models (and their lenses)?

Nikon is the devils work. Every time someone buys a Nikon they kill a kitten at the factory, true fact, i heard it from someone down the pub who used to have an uncle who's business partner's ex wife had a son that used to go out with someone that worked there.

Go for the 30D. What lens were you going to get with it? The canon 50mm f/1.8 is a fairly good lens considering the price and it's great for portraits even on a crop body. As for landscapes you might want a wider lens like the sigma 10-20mm.

Yea, I'm almost certain I'll go for the 30D. It will push my budget so I'll have to make do with a quick & dirty all-round lens for a while, depending what's available on the second hand market at the time. I'll be adding other lenses as soon as I can, though - that 10-20mm f4-5.6 would be fantastic for me. It may no be the fastest lens but most of my shooting is in good light.

I can't bloody wait to get out with a DSLR and a nice lens, dammit.

Bought myself a 30D body, should be here next week sometime.

Now for some glass. Any recommendations? I'm after a fairly basic all-rounder to start with (or possibly a nifty-fifty), then a nice wide angle to capture those landscapes (Canon EF-S 10-22 f3.5-4.5/Sigma 12-24 f4.5-5.6/Tokina 12-24 f4).

Decisions, decisions...
