FFVIII was superb. Not as good as VII or X, but on a par with XII. Didn' like the experience system, but the card game and GFs were great once you knew how to use them.

Yesssssss Hamlet. Winner.

FFXIII is real good so far, enviroments are lush, battle system is interesting and works well.

Abilities are gained with a VERY similair system to the sphere grid.

Gahh want to be home!

Hmm... that doesn't bode well. Not because the Xenosaga system was bad, but because it's not very original. Absolutely loved the Xenosaga series. The combat system was great. I've got all three PS2 games and played the series through several times.

I know, im sure we've had the same convo before about xeno, itwas only the2nd one i played, 3/4 disc job that came with a wee movie of all the stiched together FMV from the first one, which helped nothing :P i enjoyed the game ok and tried my best but just couldn't get into it and found the battle system WAY too clunky, i eventually broke down in tears shortly after arriving in the first big 'city' type thing and wasn't able to touch it again

I've never seen the word xenosage officially mentioned next to FF13, nor played it myself, but what i've seen from trailers and gameplay videos it looks like the exact same system

Not many games catching my eye in the next few months - usually the better releases come out after Sept to which I'm looking forward to Halo:Reach, Fallout New Vegas and Fable 3.

Between here and now, Alan Wake looks promising and Lego Harry Potter looks fun (always enjoyed the Lego games apart from Lego Indy 2 - awful!). Final Fantasy XIII will keep me busy for a while, also have Ghostbusters coming tomorrow from Lovefilm.

It might have been mentioned before but im not trailing through all the posts to find it...

Anyway, Civilization 5 is currently in production, ETA q4 2010 in north America.

A few important things to note about Civ5
  • hexagonal tiles instead of squares
  • new engine
  • new combat system
  • No religion
  • No espionage
  • Cant have more than 1 military unit per tile which gets rid of the popular "Stack of Death"
  • Map will contain AI controlled city-states for trade, diplomacy and conquest
  • Change to roads so there's no road spam
  • Leaders will speak their native language
  • Borders will expand more "realistically"

screenshots:

Not a fan of getting rid of espionage and religion (mods will but them back in) but might aswell give it a go when it comes out.

I really want hogs of war two to come out.

I spent a few hours playing 4-player multiplayer on the ps1 a few nights ago and remembered how good it is. Plus, you've got Rik Mayall (Richie from Bottom) commentating on how good/bad you're doing.

A few other things, while my original post seemed to show that they're taking out interesting aspects, remember they aren't leaving gaping holes in the game. Why are they taking out religion? simple i'll quote Jon Shafer, the lead designer

"We made some changes with religion. Because diplomacy is one of our focuses with Civ V, planning what an AI leader is thinking, how he's going to win the game, that wasn't something that was meshing very well with the religion system. In Civ IV, the religions were primary factors of who liked whom and who disliked whom. And that wasn't meshing very well with what we wanted to do, so we decided to move on without the religion system. But that's mainly because we wanted diplomacy to have more depth and not be so predictable. We wanted to make sure that the AI leaders were taking into account the same things as the player was taking into account. A player might not care what religion you're running, but they might care quite a bit if you attack one of their friends."

PC Gamer interview
http://www.computerandvideogames.com...38687&site=pcg

Also quote a bit more from that interview

"If you build your city next to an AI's capital, in previous games they would be like, "Oh whatever." But now we've added additional logic that lets the AI evaulate what's going on in the game as a whole in the same manner as a human would do. So if you build a city next to someone's capital, that's actually going to annoy them. They'll realise that you're settling very aggressively, and that will have an adverse relationship on them. They'll call you up and will say, hey, you're expanding there, don't do this. If you continue doing it, they'll notice that as well, and if they might actually ask that you make concessions, like give them money or something in exchange for keeping their friendship. Otherwise you could have a cold war situation."

It seems civ5 is gonna turn out to be the most tactical civ game yet.
